Rats are sneaky creatures that prefer to stay hidden, but they always leave evidence behind. Catching an infestation early can save you thousands in damage and protect your family's health. Here are the 10 most common warning signs that rats have invaded your Los Angeles home.
Rats are most active at night. If you hear scratching, scurrying, or squeaking sounds in your walls, ceiling, or attic between dusk and dawn, you likely have rats. These sounds are especially common in older LA homes with accessible attic spaces.
Rat droppings are about 3/4 inch long, dark brown, and capsule-shaped. You'll find them along walls, in cupboards, under sinks, and in attics. Fresh droppings are dark and moist, while old ones are dry and gray. Urine stains appear as dark smudges and have a strong ammonia smell.
Rats must constantly gnaw to keep their teeth from growing too long. Look for gnaw marks on wood, plastic, wires, and food packaging. Fresh gnaw marks are lighter in color. Chewed wires are especially dangerous and can cause electrical fires.
Rats follow the same paths repeatedly, leaving dark, greasy rub marks along walls, baseboards, and beams. These marks are caused by the oil and dirt in their fur. The more established the infestation, the more visible these marks become.
Rats build nests from shredded paper, fabric, insulation, and plant material. Common nesting spots include attics, wall voids, under appliances, and in storage boxes. If you find shredded materials or actual nests, you have an active infestation.
Norway rats dig burrows along foundations, under debris, and in gardens. Roof rats enter through gaps in the roofline, vents, and tree branches. Look for holes about 2-3 inches in diameter with smooth, worn edges from repeated use.
In dusty areas like attics or basements, you may see small footprints (about 3/4 inch) and tail drag marks. To test for active rats, sprinkle flour or talcum powder in suspected areas and check for fresh tracks the next day.
Dogs and cats can hear and smell rats before you notice other signs. If your pets are suddenly fixated on walls, baseboards, or specific areas, pawing at them or acting unusually alert, they may be detecting rodent activity.
Rats will eat almost anything. Check for chewed food packaging, especially in pantries and garages. Pet food left out overnight is a common target. You might also notice food moved or scattered, or holes chewed in bags and boxes.
Seeing a rat during the day is a serious sign of a large infestation, as rats are normally nocturnal. If you see one rat, there are likely many more hiding. Roof rats are slender and agile, while Norway rats are larger and stockier.
